Obituary of Bernice Carter

Bernice "Bernie" Carter, 89, of Syracuse, NY passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, July 27, 2017 with family and friends by his side. Bernie was born on August 25, 1927 in Elba, AL. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Marianne Carter, sister Nell Florence, brothers Frank , Dick and James Carter, and sons-in-law Andy Damiano and Bill Crouse. Bernie is survived by his daughters Helene Crouse and Cathy Damiano, five grandchildren Shane Carruthers of North Carolina, Tracey Carruthers and his wife Carrie of Syracuse, NY, Russell Damiano and his wife Sarah of North Carolina, Leigh Strait and her husband Brian of North Carolina, and Billie Jeanne Crouse of North Carolina, 10 great-grandchildren, and his companion Sheila Hetzel. Bernie was a U.S. Army World Ward II veteran. After moving to Syracuse, NY following the war, he worked at Carrier Corporation and many other part-time jobs to support his family. He and his wife, Marianne, founded Carter Interiors more than 50 years ago. He successfully grew his business and was able to retire in 1992. Bernie was also very active in his community participating in multiple organizations such as the Lion's Club, Southside Business Association and sat on the Syracuse Zoning Board. Bernie was one of the most outgoing, caring, and generous men. Everyone who met him instantly became a friend. He was active in his church communities both here in Syracuse, NY and in Jensen Beach, FL where he enjoyed his winters for more than 40 years and much of his retirement. Calling hours are scheduled for 3-6 pm on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home in Syracuse, NY. Funeral will take place at St. James Catholic Church at 11 am on Monday, July 31, 2017. Burial will take place immediately following mass at Valley Cemetery in Syracuse, NY. All are welcome to attend and celebrate his life. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at the VA Medical Center in Syracuse, NY for their care and compassion.
