Obituary of Donald Raymond Vanderpool

Donald R. Vanderpool, 100, formerly of Syracuse, N.Y., passed away May 29th, 2019, in New Port Richey, FL. Born and raised in Syracuse, he was the son of the late Franklin and Nellie (Ditton) Vanderpool. Don was a veteran of World War II, having served proudly as a US Marine in Guadalcanal, Guam, and Japan. He retired from General Motors Co. after 31 years of service. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Don loved building and fixing things for others, and enjoyed yard work. He is predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Betty (Bristol) Vanderpool, who died in 1980. He is survived by his sons, Jim of Grass Valley, CA and Scot (Jo) of Camillus, NY; four grandchildren, Kate, Connor, Amanda, and Zachary; and his companion of 29 years, Helen Eklund of New Port Richey. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held Friday June 7th at 11:00am at Onondaga Valley Cemetery, Syracuse. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Don’s memory to the American Cancer Society.
