Obituary of Shirley Adsitt Wood

Shirley Adsitt Wood, age 91 of LaFayette, NY, died on July12, 2019 at home, surrounded by her family. Shirley was born in Syracuse, NY. She was a graduate of Syracuse University and received her masters at Cortland State. She worked for the Syracuse City Schools until retiring in 1988 where she taught Mathematics for 24 years. Shirley was a member of the LaFayette Church where she and her husband were founding members. She served for many years on the Missions Committee and you’d often find her greeting visitors and regular attenders in the foyer on Sunday mornings. She was also active for many years in the LaFayette Historical Society. Shirley enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren playing sports, often travelling many miles and sitting out in all kinds of weather. Shirley enjoyed travelling to spend time with her family. She enjoyed working on her landscaping, maintaining the beauty of her home. You’d often find her riding her tractor mowing her massive lawn. She enjoyed bonfires and fellowshipping around them. Shirley and her husband hosted a biannual family reunion for over one hundred Wood/Millis descendants. Her home was always available for family, homeschool, or youth group events. She was a faithful reader of God’s word. Shirley spent many hours in prayer for her loved ones and our country. Shirley is survived by six children, Steven F. (Kim) Wood of El Segundo, CA; Kathleen M. Wood of LaFayette, NY and Dewey, AZ; Charles G. (Sharon) Wood of El Mirage, AZ; Georgia W. (Mike) Phipps of LaFayette, NY; Susan A. (Billy) Stacy of LaFayette, NY; Martin S. (Lori) Wood of Derry, NH; twenty grandchildren, Brett (Emily), Kelsey, Chase and Morgan Wood; Jason Childers; Josiane (Justin) West; Hannah (David) Mazur; Seth (Angel) Childers; Tina (Jeremy) Culver; Matthew Wood; Abby (Joe) DeVore; Nathanael Phipps; Miranda (Stephen) Evans, David (Caitlin) and Nicolas Farruggio; Jonathan (Jessica), Joshua, Timothy (Caroline), Rachel and Thomas Wood, sixteen great-grandchildren; several cousins, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of forty-seven years, George F. Wood who died in 1996; her parents, Charles H. and Dorotha (Terpening) Adsitt of LaFayette; and sisters, Donna F. Lauzon, of LaFayette, and Mary Butler of Columbia, MD. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 pm, July 17, at LaFayette Alliance Church, 6069 Cherry Valley Turnpike, LaFayette, New York; with a funeral service to immediately follow. A private burial will be in LaFayette Rural Cemetery the following morning.
