Thomas Sayles

Obituary of Thomas E. Sayles

Thomas (Ty) Sayles passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on January 29th at the age of 90. Ty was a pioneer in the automobile service industry and was well known for the many innovations he introduced. For many years he was the Service Manager at the Lewis Goodman Chrysler-Plymouth Dealership. Ty also served as a consultant for the Fuccillo Dealerships for 26 years where he was particularly proud to have overseen the setup of service departments for dealerships across the country from Yonkers to Los Angeles. Ty also received numerous awards for his contributions to the auto service industry. Ty was a very dedicated Youth Hockey Coach and was much beloved by his players and their families. Ty also was elected Vice-President of Mid-State Youth Hockey and was the first to coach a female hockey player in that program. He and Gilda, his wife of 70 years, were passionate racehorse owners and enjoyed their many successes; owning and racing over 20 thoroughbred horses. In fact, Ty named their final horse Gilda Marie after his beloved wife. Ty was predeceased by his wife Gilda, father Edward, mother Sarah and brother James. He will be sadly missed his sisters Barbara (McKeen), Carol Ann (Winzig) and four loving children: Ed (Kiki), Sally (Sam) Mason, T.R. (Shelia) and Scott (Joanne) and dozens of nieces and nephews. He and Gilda were also faithfully devoted to their thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as their Papa, joyfully attending countless of their games, matches and plays. Calling hours will be held at Our Lady of Hope Church at 4845 South Salina Street on Saturday February 1st from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM immediately followed by a memorial mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation in Ty’s name may be made to Our Lade of Hope Church.
