Dear Huggins Family,
I am so sorry to hear about Gene’s passing. I worked with Gene for many years at CNS and summer school at Main St. He was so supportive of my students who were blind or visually impaired. From the oldest to the youngest students in our district, Gene touched many lives with his gentle teaching style and support for all learners. I am so glad to have worked with Gene and his memory will live on in the ways he demonstrated kindness, support and education for special needs students. Also, I too will always think of Gene when I see a bird that I can’t identify... Gene would know the answer! Peace and love to you all!

Gail, Christopher & Shari, Rebekah, Jocelyn, and family, and many other friends--I had the pleasure of getting to know Gene shortly after I started attending the Syracuse church in the later fall of '83 as a 17-year-old high school student. From the get-go, we had a comfortable, friendly, and uplifting relationship within the church community. I always appreciated his good-natured, devoted, and good-humored demeanor, and he was a man that I could reach out to when needing advice on various faith/life topics while I lived in Syracuse into my early 20's. He knew how to live obediently to Christ and be a good witness for him whenever I saw Gene interacting with people. Gene exuded a great amount of true godly humility and love and was quite a gentleman; he always sought to be at peace with everyone. He was well-suited to serve the congregation as a ruling elder for many years. Several years ago, in 2016, he took the time to meet my wife and me as she and I were visiting Syracuse for the weekend preceding Labor Day which we appreciated greatly; in the mid-later 80's, he was pleased to give me rides to and from church on various occasions and I am grateful for those practical points of support. I convey my deepest sympathy and shall pray for comfort. We love and will miss you, Gene, and are thankful for the life that you lived here on earth.

My friend Angela and I talk all the time about how you can’t pick your blood family members but you can choose the family you want. I met Gene Huggins on 4/18/2009 while he was leading a field trip at Montezuma WMA. He made such an impression on me that I actually wrote that in my diary. That was the beginning of a beautiful 11 year friendship. I have so many wonderful memories to cherish - the Christmas Bird Counts (counting crows in Oakwood cemetery and the Barred Owl in Canastota and waking Michaela up so she could see it), all the talks we had during those many outings, the Christmas concerts at his church that became part of my Christmas traditions, and the wonderful lunches I shared with him and his wife Gail. He was a great, gracious man and a great mentor. His love of birds was only surpassed by his love for his family, God and Jesus Christ. He was a friend and he was family.
Gene, I take comfort knowing that you are in the arms of God and that you’re at peace. I’m so happy that I got to see you last December when you stopped to have lunch with us. I truly enjoyed the gift of our friendship and will miss those great big hugs you always gave me. Rest In Peace. Love, Michele.

We were very sorry to hear that Gene passed away. We attended many field trips he led for Onondaga Audubon Society. Gene was a great birder and very patient with new birdwatchers, which we were when we met him in the early 1980's. He was kind and generous with his time, and always made a point of greeting us when we saw him at the Audubon Christmas Count compiling dinners and other gatherings. We will truly miss him.

One of the kindest people I have worked with throughout my teaching years. I worked alongside Gene as a Special Ed Teacher at CNS High School. He was always smiling, full of energy and good conversation. Gene helped many children in his career to have a plan after graduation and he was well respected for his gentle teaching approach. Gene gave me an appreciation for birds along with my Grandmother. All you had to do was describe one you saw and Gene would know what it was! He wiill be missed but, thought of every time I see a bird..Prayers to the Huggins family. Christina Smart, Clay NY

Dear Gail and family, I’m glad Gene is with mom in glory. He took me out for a birdwatching tutorial the very last time we were at camp together- two years ago? because I had missed so many other organized ones. It would’ve been nice to know him better. What a joy that we have eternity to look forward to. I will be praying for your comfort.
