I began corresponding with Greg in 2007 because he was the college roommate of my late uncle, Glen O'Brien. They served in Vietnam during the same time, although not together. Greg would leave yellow, blue and white flowers at Glens gravesite every year just before Memorial Day. This past May I did not see any flowers. It sometimes went months between our correspondence so I just now discovered that he had passed.
Greg helped me in so many ways - he was such a nice person and I truly enjoyed corresponding with him. He helped me get to know my Uncle Glen, who passed away shortly before I was born. He patiently answered all my questions about Uncle Glen and his service in Vietnam. He took a great interest in me and my children and was so kind to me.
I will miss talking with him and I hope that he is looking down on all of us now.

Greg contacted me about 6 years ago asking how he could best serve our Scouting Program. As Cub Master, I asked him if he would like to lead by my side. His sweet spot ended up supporting all our adult leaders with his calm presence and patient attention to tasks. I have no doubt many of our Scouts benefited from Greg’s example of stepping up to aid whomever needed assistance. He instinctively knew how to lift up someone in need. Our program was better with Greg’s involvement! He will be missed & his gifts to our Scouts will always be cherished and spent on enhancing the Scouting Program here in Lafayette. An inspiration to his peers & role model for our youth.
Cheers to you stepping up & making our lives better, Greg!! God Bless & God Speed!!

This is so sad to hear this news. Greg and I have been friends since the 70's; going all the way back to MMSC days. While we lived 1200 miles apart, we always seemed to manage a visit whenever I was back in the area. Meeting up at Zebbs and closing the place down, just talking for hours became a tradition that I will absolutely miss terribly.
He was such an inspiration for me and had a huge impact on my life and my success in my profession, as a father and as a friend.
RIP my friend;

Condolences to Greg's family. Rest in peace my friend. We worked together, discussed parental duties, explored our individual military careers. Always amazed at the prison work you did and the years of teaching. Rich

It was a great sadness to learn of Greg's death. He was an enthusiastic Jail Ministry Visitor Advocate who was always eager to volunteer to visit individuals at the Onondaga County Justice Center. He was a friend to everyone, and I looked forward to talking with him as we entered the Jail or at a meeting at some other location. He was full of curiosity to learn about others.And often eager to share his perspective. He will be missed by all who knew him at Jail Ministry.

My wife and I were saddened to hear of Greg's death. Before covid we would share a meal once or twice a year.
We always found many things to talk about. That will be missed

I knew Greg from afar in school as he was a few years older but over the last many years have come to know and appreciate him online. I will be the poorer intellectually, his posts were always interesting, due to his absence but hope I can carry forward his willingness to be open to all sides of an issue, His evenness in all discussions has been amazing. He was a true son of our town who got going on what needed to be done by becoming a respected leader also. I truly miss him.

I knew Greg from covering the LaFayette Town Board as a reporter for The Post-Standard newspaper for several years in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I had the utmost respect for Greg, who was not a politician at all, but a true public servant. He was smart, pretty much unflappable, had a great sense of humor and was quick to laugh. He was fun to "cover," in the journalistic sense, and he kept me on my toes. He often talked about his love of being a substitute teacher, and from what I gather, he had a deft touch with young minds, especially when they asked him about his service in Viet Nam. Basically the only times I recall Greg showing any kind of annoyance was when people -- or the media -- would fail to capitalize the 'F' in LaFayette. Other than that, it was difficult to get him riled up. I still think of him often. My condolences to his loved ones. He was a good man.

I am so sorry and sad to learn of Greg's passing. I had the privilege of being a co-worker, and any interaction we had never failed to make my day a little brighter. I admired and enjoyed his intellect, compassion, thoughtfulness, and sense of humor, and appreciated how humble he was. He was a fascinating person with a very big heart. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all those who cared about him. He will be greatly missed, but fondly remembered.

I came to know Mr. Scammell when he subbed at Tully. He was always a delight to chat with at the end of his day. In one particular conversation, we discussed the controversy over whether his hometown was LaFayette or Lafayette. He definitely seemed to have done his research and knew which was correct! So very sorry to hear of his passing. He will be missed. My sincere sympathy to his family and friends.
