Obituary of Cecelia Edna Powless

Cecelia Edna Tarbell Powless, age 90, of 319-B Hemlock Road, Onondaga Nation died Sunday, November 10, 2002 at Francis House, Syracuse, New York. Cecelia was born July 8, 1912 in Akwasasne, the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Garrow) Tarbell. She was a member of the Mohawk Wolf Clan. She participated in the Mother's Club and First Aid Rescue Group for World War II. She worked at the Onondaga Nation School in the cafeteria, as a library aide and as a teacher's aide. She helped found the Onondaga Reservation Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She was awarded "Outstanding Senior Citizen" in 1988 by the North American Indian Club of Syracuse. She traveled extensively with the Unity Caravan. She played a major role in supporting her husband, Chief Irving Powless Sr. who passed away in 1985. She was also predeceased by her son, Hubert Powless in 2001. Mrs. Powless is survived by two sons, Chief Irving Powless Jr. and Everett Powless, both of the Onondaga Nation; two daughters, Phyllis Farmer and Beverly Powless, both of the Onondaga Nation; one sister, Ruth Winward of Croton-on-the-Hudson, New York; 15 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Services: Tuesday, November 12, 2002, 1:00 p.m. in the Onondaga Nation Longhouse. Burial: Onondaga Nation Cemetery. Calling Hours: At your convenience at the Old Longhouse on Hemlock Road.
