Douglas E. "Papa Smurf" Capstraw, age 79, of Syracuse, New York died Friday, June 28, 2002 at Francis House, Syracuse. Mr. Capstraw was born April 29, 1923 in Malone, New York. He was a welder for Iron Workers Local 60, Syracuse, New York for 22 years, retiring in 1986. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of America Legion Valley Post 1468, the Disabled American Veterans and the Moose Club. He was a communicant of St. James Church, Syracuse. He was preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla Legare Capstraw in 1985. He is survived by his companion of 15 years, Joan Judge Pontello; one daughter, Diane Allen of Malone, New York; one son, Douglas I. Capstraw of Jamesville, New York; one brother, Gerald Capstraw of Central Square, New York; three grandchildren. Funeral: Monday, July 1, 2002, 10:30 a.m. at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, Inc., and 11:00 a.m. in St. James Church, 4845 S. Salina St., Syracuse where a Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated by Father Raymond B. Wood. Burial: St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt, New York.
