Obituary of Elmer L. E. L." Harnden

Elmer L. "E. L." Harnden, age 99, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 24, 2002 at his home on Howlett Hill Road after a lengthy sickness. Mr. Harnden was born December 29, 1902 in Syracuse, New York, the son of William and Carrie Maude (Hall) Harnden. He was the husband of the late Lucille Roberts Harnden who passed away in 1966. His daughter, Carol Harnden Sellars died in 1969. "E. L." was a Banker for First Trust & Deposit and Key Bank for 45 years. He retired in 1968 as a Branch Manager of the Valley Key Bank. He was active in the South Side Business Men during his time at the Southside office. While living in the Valley, he served with other residents of Merritt Avenue as a Civil Patrol Officer during World War II. A longtime native of the Valley, Mr. Harnden and his family moved to Onondaga Hill in 1946. His neighbors would often come from near and far to pick fruit and vegetables grown on his Circle Drive farm. He was a member of the Onondaga Hill United Methodist Church and its? Dual Club. He served as Church Treasurer from 1965 to 1972. Mr. Harnden was an avid hunter and fisherman. He often walked the hills that he loved with a favorite dog by his side. "E. L." was a great dog lover and raised many cocker spaniels diring his life. After his retirement, he took up golf and played many of the local courses. He and his partners seldom used electric carts, even after reaching their eighties. Elmer loved to plant flowers, which many people admired when passing his house. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Stuart and Caroline Harnden of Casper, Wyoming and son David R. Harnden of Howlett Hill, New York; Three granddaughters, two grandsons, ten great-grandchildren and one great great-granddaughter; several nephews, nieces and cousins. Funeral: Friday, March 1, 2002, 11:00 a.m. at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, Inc., 4612 S. Salina Street, Syracuse with Rev. Sung Kim officiating. Burial: Onondaga Valley Cemetery, 2500 Valley Drive, Syracuse. Calling Hours: Thursday, February 28, 2002, from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, Inc., 4612 S.
