Obituary of Leigton C. Kinner
Leighton "Larry" C. Kinner, 94, died of old age on Sunday, June 4, 2023, following a brief stay at Fahey Rehab Center. Larry was born in Elmira, NY on March 22, 1929, to Allen D. and Nellie C. Kinner, the youngest of 4 children. He was predeceased by parents, his sisters, Allene, Gayle, and Faith and many cousins in the Kinner and Hanlon clans.
Larry was known for his love of music. As a boy, he played violin and and sang in the school and church choirs. He attended St. Luke's Congregational Church, across the street from the Kinner home on Oak Street. He loved football, horses, and music, and gave up violin in favor of football. Larry attended Elmira Free Academy and Lakemont Academy, where he graduated from high school, Canton, got AA degree from Morrisville, and finished his education in animal husbandry and horticulture at Cornell. He joined the Army during the Korean Conflict which ended before he finished basic training so he continued his career playing football on the base team.
Larry worked in many jobs, insurance, NCR, tending horses, landscaping. In 1973, he left Elmira for Syracuse, found a new church and joined the choir. At Plymouth Congregational Church he found a home, serving on the Deacons, Christian Education, and Building committees. He worked for Onondaga County Parks and Recreation until he decided to focus on his own landscaping business.
Larry is survived by Peggy, his wife of 44 years, his son, Leighton "Lanny" C. Kinner, Jr. , son Robert T. Klock (Delenn), daughter, Marion "Missy" Carr; eight grandchildren, Melissa (George) Auerbach, Andrew Kinner, Raychel Lunn, Jennifer (Stephen) Salamone, Demi, Chloe, Ray, and Hunter Carr; and 4 great grandchildren, Eleanor, James, Anakin, and Sawyer.
Suffering from cardiopulmonary disease, he gradually lost his memory and strength, but not his love of family and sense of humor.
A service to celebrate Larry's life will be held at 1PM on Sunday June 25, 2023, at Plymouth Congregational Church, 232 E. Onondaga St., Syracuse, NY 13202 at 1PM. A reception at the church will follow.
