Harold Thousand Jr.

Obituary of Harold R. Thousand Jr.

Harold “Bob” Thousand Jr., 71, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at the Syracuse VA Hospital.

Born on November 14, 1952 in Massena, NY, Bob was the 3rd oldest of six children born to Harold “Hal” Thousand and Marjorie Thousand. During his childhood, he braved the cold with a paper route and recounted how he liked going to into the A&P that his dad worked at to get candy.

After graduating from Massena Central High School as part of the Class of 1971, Bob joined the Air Force and worked as a cook. He often recounted how he visited different places like England and Guam while serving. Upon leaving the military, he moved to Syracuse and worked at the Syracuse Developmental Center. It was here where he met his wife, Carol C. Thousand.

After marrying Carol and having a son, Harold “Rob” Thousand III, Bob worked in various human service roles that included work at Hutchings’ Psychiatric Center and the Rescue Mission. All of Bob’s friends from work recount him as being a funny coworker and a good man.

Bob had a flair for the artistic and studied art at O.C.C. in Syracuse. He also enjoyed gardening and, later in life, was an avid fan of photography.

Bob was predeceased by his wife, Carol Thousand, his sister Margaret Bottone and both of his parents. He is survived by his son, Harold “Rob” Thousand III, his brothers, William, Warren and Richard Thousand and his sister, Sarah Boyce.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, an organization that is fighting the condition that Bob fought until the end.
