Obituary of Peter F. Shields

Peter F. Shields, 82, of Rochester, passed away on September 1, 2023. Pete served in the United States Army as an MP. After his service, Pete worked in the information Technology field for Unity Mutual Insurance. He loved to play golf and was an excellent bowler. Pete was an avid S.U. Sports fan even after residing in Indianapolis for many years. While living in Indiana during the Covid-19 Pandemic, Pete was recognized after he received an award for his dedicated work at the local “Meals & More” Program. When he was 79 years old he continued to work during the shutdown of the program‘s on site meals, by delivering food to clients throughout the areas 8 counties.

He was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Kathryn Shields; sister, Susan (Gerald) Pettis; and the mother of his 2 children, Marilyn George.

Pete is survived by, his son, Todd (Kelley) Shields; daughter, Melissa (John-deceased) Ferlenda; granddaughters, Casey (Thomas) Jones, Brittany (Gregory) Webb and Jade Ferlenda; grandsons, Nicholas and Anthony Ferlenda; several  great-grandchildren, who he made sure to visit as often as he could when in Syracuse; nieces, Shelly Fabris, Melanie (Bob) Pettis-Frey and  Melissa (Ricky) Short-McClain; nephew, Michael Pettis (Kevin); and 9 great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and burial will be private for immediate family only.

We would like to express a special debt of gratitude to Pete’s nieces in Rochester for showing their kindness and generosity as his caregivers before his passing.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Pete’s honor to the Multiple Sclerosis Society (MS).
