Obituary of Marcy J. Singer

Marcy Jane Singer, 93, daughter of Ernest J. and Alta Lively Singer, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2024. A lifelong resident of Syracuse, Marcy graduated from St. Anthony of Padua High School and St. Joseph’s School of Nursing where she fulfilled her lifelong desire to become a nurse.  Marcy worked in the O.R. at St.  Joseph’s Hospital and then on staff at Syracuse General Hospital before a desire to specialize in public health led her to complete an undergraduate degree at Syracuse University and a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota.  After several years in public health with the Onondaga County Health Department and the Syracuse City School District, Marcy continued her career in higher education.  She held faculty positions at Syracuse University and at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing where she was highly regarded by both her colleagues and her students. Post-retirement for Marcy involved several roles in the community including a school crossing guard and a volunteer for the county immunization program.

Marcy was an active participant in St. Anthony of Padua church serving as Eucharistic Minister and lector.  As a member of Zonta International, she contributed to the betterment of life for women all over the globe.  In her leisure time, Marcy enjoyed researching family genealogy, tending her garden, vacationing with her sisters, playing with her pets, and cultivating friendships. Marcy had lifelong friends from every place she lived, studied or worked.

Predeceased by her brother Joseph (Jay) and sisters, Dorothy Gallagher and Sister Mary Margaret, CSJ, Marcy is survived by her sister-in-law, Anne Singer. In addition, 99 nieces and nephews over four generations called her Aunt Marcy. Two of those nieces, Theresa Gallagher Baker and Joanne Singer, provided unparalleled loving care and practical assistance to Marcy during her later years.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, April 20th at 10AM at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1515 Midland Ave, Syracuse. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Sedgwick Heights for their thoughtful care of Marcy over the past four years.
