Alice Shute

Obituary of Alice Warner Shute

Alice Warner Shute, 99 of Lafayette, died on Wednesday April 6, 2022 surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Alice was a strong, principled, loving wife and mother who was raised along with nine siblings and experienced all the hardships of the Great Depression.  Despite the family’s financial difficulties, Alice was able to complete high school and found ways to pay for her advanced degree in education from SUNY Cortland.  After completing her studies, Alice married her life partner of 67 years, Walter Shute.  She was a kind and loving mother who always expected the best from her children and instilled in them the importance of a good education: all pursued advanced degrees after high school.  When her youngest son, entered elementary school, Alice resumed her career and taught for 26 years in the Syracuse City School System.  One of the greatest sorrows of her life was the loss of her son, Craig, to a sudden illness at the age of 31; but she was able to find a way to cheerfully continue as a wife, educator and active participant in the family business.  Some of her favorite pastimes were gardening, collecting antiques, weaving baskets and designing and making quilts.  Alice delighted in the arrival of her nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.  Maintaining family ties and connections were important to Alice.  She hosted family reunions for both the Shute and Warner sides of her family, at her home for at least 50 years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Shute and a son, Craig Shute.

She raised five children and is survived by, Linda (Phil) DeSaw, Bruce (Sally) Shute, Eric (Ken Mack) Shute, and Dale (Ruth Anne) Shute; nine grandchildren, Adrian, Seth, Niki, Justin, Jonathan, Travis, Sienna, Sydney and Craig; 14 great grandchildren; three siblings, Ruth Pierce, Helen Shute, Loren Warner; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Calling hours will be Monday, April 18, 2022 from 2 to 4PM at Columbian Presbyterian Church, corner of route 20 & 11, Lafayette, NY 13084.  Services will follow at 4PM, at the church.  Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, 2584 Field Lane, Lafayette, NY 13084 entrusted with arrangements.
