Obituary of Joseph H. Ballway

Joseph H. Ballway Sr., 87, of Syracuse, New York, died Wednesday. February 15, 2006 in Mesa, Arizona. Joseph was born July 20, 1918 in Syracuse, New York, the son of the Carl F. and Anna (Firnstein) Ballway. He was a 46 year resident of The Valley in Syracuse and a graduate of St. Vincent dePaul High School Class of 1935. He was a Navy veteran of WW II. On Thanksgiving Day 1941 he married Helen Kerrigan and following the wedding, they traveled to New York City on the Honeymoon Express along with four other newlywed couples. He was the owner and operator of Ballway?s Market for 20 years, retiring in 1979. He was a communicant of St. James Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister and a Greeter. He was an avid bowler participating in leagues at Pfohl?s and following their closing he continued bowling in leagues until two years ago. He coached Youth Baseball, was an avid Bridge and card player and an avid reader. Joseph is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia (Gerald) Cook of Mesa, Arizona and Mary (Roland) Komorowski of Oak Creek, WisconsinI; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph Jr. (Jenny) Ballway of Mesa, Arizona and James (Valerie) Ballway of Boxford, Massachusetts; nine grandchildren. Services: Tuesday, February 21, 2006, 10:15 a.m. at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, Inc., and 11:00 a.m. in St. James Church, 4845 S. Salina Street, Syracuse, New York where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial: St. Mary's Cemetery Mausoleum, 4100 E. Genesee Street, Dewitt, New York.
