Mark Carbacio

Obituary of Mark V. Carbacio

Mark V. Carbacio, 73, passed away on Sunday, April 28th, in Rome, NY. following a long battle with illness. A lifelong tinkerer and Mr. Fix-It, he graduated from Jamesville-DeWitt High School in 1969 and attended technical school, building on his love of all things electronics. Mark went on to manage the family shop, Auto Helpline--always in his trusty tow truck--before transitioning into tech as a Service and Product Manager for A-Z Computers in the early 2000s.

Mark was a key member of the Syracuse Chapter of the National Hot Rod Association, racing 'The Wild Mouse' in drag races at ESTA Raceway. With a deep, lifelong love of classic cars, Mark could often be found showing or schmoozing at the Syracuse Nationals, or set up along the Boulevard to watch them cruise in the summer. An avid hobbyist, Mark also collected and raced slot cars, sharing his passion with fellow slot-car enthusiasts and the community through his hobby shop, MCM Raceway.

Mark is survived by his sister Marsha Carbacio Phillips of DeWitt; nieces Susan and Stephanie Phillips of Syracuse; Aunt Linda (Si) Matteson-Sifer of Kirkville; Aunt Toni Carbacio Dyneka of Auburn; several cousins, and a circle of lifelong friends.

He is predeceased by his brother Stephen John Jr., parents Stephen John Carbacio Sr. and Shirley Matteson Carbacio, Aunt Audrey Thomas VanSlyke, grandmother Jane Thomas Shepardson and his beloved dog, Misty.

Mark will always be remembered for his mischievous nature, love of classic movies and dedication to Halloween--a passion he passed on to his nieces, who carry on his tradition of epic Halloween displays to this day. While he may have departed this world, his legacy lives on in memories filled with laughter, games, and the playful spirit that defined Mark's life.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the wonderful staff at Rome Health, and to his nurse Joshua at the Grand in Rome, for their dedication to Mark’s care and comfort in his final weeks.

Calling hours and services will be held on Tuesday May 7th, 2024 from 5p-7p at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, 4612 South Salina Street, Syracuse, New York 13205.
