What a comfort it is to know that so you have touched so many lives in such a positive and loving way. On Saturday, May 5, Pastor Paul so eloquently said that you gave the word "gentleman" true meaning..... "gentle" man. I am truly awed by all the kindness and selflessness you have given to people in this world without for one second expecting anything in return. In so doing, you have been blessed in a way one could only dream of.... people remember your kindness, the lessons you have taught us, your "gentle" ways of reminding us that we have choices in life and that special way of guding us down the right road, and the never-ending forgiveness you have shown us all when we have faltered. You are blessed, we are blessed. I love you for all your acceptance, guidance, and love. I know you will be close by me and continue showing me the way.Love and peace to you.

Doug, You have left an indelible imprint on the hearts of so many; my life, and that of countless others, has been richly blessed because we have called you "Friend". Your warmth and kindness, and your generous and gentle spirit have enriched our lives in myriad ways. You have taught me the meaning of friendship without having to speak a word. You shared your gifts in love and with grace till our cups were truly running over. I am sad today as I know your body will be put to rest, but I also know that when I hear the haunting call of the loon on the quiet water and see the twinkling star dancing in the night, your spirit remains among us and within us. We're smiling back at you, dear Doug.Love, Susan

At this eleventh hour in Syracuse family and friends are gathered to remember the myriad ways their lives have been enriched by Doug over the years, and to rehearse the parts of their faith and belief system that sustain, nurture, and inspire them. Here in Nova Scotia, at this same hour, over lunch, we are doing the same, and our spirits are joined in this celebration. We know that Doug's life and personality need no drum roll or trumpet fanfare to announce his ways with us. Details of his presence i the past help to dispel the pangs of his absence now. Quietly, gently, consistently, whether weilding a mop on the kitchen floor, bathing the kids, swinging a hammer, paint brush, or tennis racket his life spoke to us. Lessons shared from his experience in the trade..."too many nails, or too many brush strokes have diminishing returns...,etc"Many conversations remembered, with his subtle, and intense questions and comments about life issues and meanings with laughter always close to the surface. Even the shadows of his recent years struggles with the body and mind served to highlight his essence and core as shadows do on a fine painting. So, in whatever form Love chooses to take with the future of your soul, Doug, we say " thank you!!" for having been among us in such nurturing ways!

To the Gotham family, Our thoughts are with you in this very difficult time.Doug was a great man and we appreciated how he welcomed us as his noisy neighbours into cottage life at the lake. Ed and I feel fortunate to have had a good visit with Doug and Diane when they were up to Wolfe Lake last summer for a brief stay. Doug will remain in our hearts always.

Dad, When Steve and I were dating and were pretty serious I still wasn't quite sure if he was the man for me. My mother told me to watch you and see how you treated his mother. She said that would be a pretty good indication of how Stephen would treat me after a few years of marriage. Dad, after seeing what a wonderful husband and father you were, I thought I would be fortunate if Stephen treated me half as good as you treated Diane. You are a kind, loving and gentle soul! You have always been the perfect role model for your children. You will never be far from my thoughts and prayers. I will miss you. Love always,Mary

Having known Doug (and family) brings back many fond memories of the kids growing up, school at Meacham, and the fun on Longmeadow Dr. I often ask myself--""where has all the time flown to""? Most of all, I remember his smile, and congenial personality. I know he will be missed greatly by the family and all who knew him.

Dad, never was there such a constant presence in my life. Never has there been anybody so patient, trustworthy and noble. Your integrity, your honor, your love are all strengths I strive for in my own life. You were a wonderful, loving father to all of us. I cannot express what you have meant to both Kali and I as we all struggled with our ""growing pains"". We love, we grow, and we learn. We have been blessed to be loved by you. Until we are together again, we will never forget all the wonders of you. Love, Tracey
